Silverweed

Page history last edited by PBworks 16 years, 8 months ago

Potentilla anserina. It is known in Gaelic as one of the seven breads of the Gael referring to its great importance in the diet of islanders. The tuberous roots were sometimes eaten raw and had a rough, nutty flavour;when roasted the nutty flavour was more subtle and pleasant. The dried and roasted root could be ground into a flour.

It is possible that before cereals were first cultivated, about 4000BC, silverweed meal may well have been part of the staple diet. At late as the 18th century it was much resorted to at times of famine, during the clearances it became a useful foodstuff for the dispossessed.
